My personal journey with the Portuguese language began relatively recently. Before living in South America, I had never really been exposed to Portuguese. My interest was sparked when I began to notice the large amount of Brazilian tourists in Santiago. After a year and a half of taking Portuguese classes in Chile, I spent a month in immersion classes in Florianópolis, Brazil.
While it took me 6 years to honestly feel comfortable having a conversation in Spanish, it took 1.5 years in Portuguese. I am told that learning additional languages after becoming comfortable in your second language only becomes easier and easier.
I hold so much respect for Brazilians and the Portuguese language (I have yet to travel to Portugal!), and I encourage you to look into Portuguese if you are seeking to start another language.
